"The next iPhone" rumors are a popular online pastime activity and vary widely in terms of plausibility. This last batch comes from the social network of Feng Wei from China and says that Apple will double the number of pixels for the next iPhone and side frames will be thinner, like mini iPad.
The current iPhone 5 has about 730 thousand pixels and 326ppi pixel density. If the rumor is true, the next iPhone will have a display with around 1.5 million pixels and pixel density of 460ppi (that is assuming the change of screen size doesn t). If Apple decides to match current 5 "1080 p droids in 440ppi, the screen size can be increased up to 4.2".
Of course, this measure will be difficult to go the 3gs to 4, Apple has doubled the amount of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, with efficiency, quadrupling the number of pixels. Apps that didn t support the new resolution were easily adopted.
Since 4 and 4S to 5, Apple has added extra 176 pixels rows and applications that support the new resolution are only mailbox with black bars (some still have them).
But twice the number of pixels for the next iPhone, Apple will have to multiply the horizontal and vertical pixel count by a square root of 2 (for which the resulting resolution is something like 905 x 1606). Scale applications to fit this time will be more difficult (or will have black bars at the sides also), so it is unlikely that Apple will go for this solution.
The rumor for iOS 7 new aspect could help in some way, but we will have to wait and see.
The rumor also indicates that the next iPhone comes into production next month and will be launched in September, which means that we could soon start seeing leaks.
