BlackBerry patent portfolio is worth $2 to $3 billion, Analyst estimates

As talk about the possibility of going on sale or possibly introducing a joint-venture of BlackBerry is on the rise, some analysts are looking to the Canadian patent portfolio as a potential savior.

According to CEO MDB Capital Group, Chris Marlett, who spoke to the portfolio of patents AllThingsD BlackBerry only able to meet about $2 to $3 trillion in a cross-licensing agreement.

And that is the estimated price if a solitary proposal for the portfolio. If say Apple, Google or Microsoft wanted to buy it and start a bidding war, BB patents could knead sums between $4 and $5 billion.

BlackBerry still carries much weight in the industry despite having financial problems--their devices and services are well known, BlackBerry Messenger is used by some 50 million users. Thus if a player of major industries such as Google, Microsoft and Apple wanted to buy BlackBerry completely, the deal could be worth $8 to $10 billion.

BlackBerry currently 5,236 active United States patents and about 3,730 active applications in wireless communications.
